Mise-en-scene of Black Panther
I decided to comment on the mise-en-scene
of the movie Black Panther, because the movie is so unique in the fact that the
character come from a completely different cultural background and a kingdom
that is unknown to humans.
After T’Challa returns to Wakanda
with Nakia it gives various different deep space shots by showing the spaceship
flying and the scenery surrounding it in the background.
It first shows the spaceship flying through the human world
is an to show the simplicity of nature. Then more deep space shots were used to
show the technological advancements that they have in the kingdom of Wakanda. As
they enter through the invisible dome of Wakanda one is faced with large skyscrapers
in the middle of the forest.
When T’Challa
arrives at his palace he is greeted by his mother and sister. The lighting during
this scene is high-key, because there are little shadows and the light clearly
illuminates the characters. It can also symbolize how the kingdom of Wakanda is
bright and prosperous as opposed to the human world. This is the opposite as to
how the human world was depicted. While T’Challa was in the human world, low-key
lighting was used as the scene took place during the night in the forest as he
was trying to capture the bad guys.
Costumes play a giant role in the
movie. When in Wakanda, people are wearing their traditional clothing. For
example, the women warrior’s costumes are a bright red with designed patterns
on them. Traditionally, in the human world, soldiers wear camouflaged clothing
or have darker colored clothing. The mother is also seen wearing a large white
gown with a large white headpiece to signify her role in society which is to help
rule. The opposite could be said about T’Challas younger sister as she is seen wearing
casual clothing such as a skirt and a t-shirt.
