Why horror ?
I was inspired to choose the horror
genre for my movie opening as I have always loved a good scare. When watching
horror movies, the amount of mystery and suspense presented in the movie makes
my adrenaline rush. Getting a good scare has never hurt anyone before. By the
viewer constantly waiting for a freighting scene to come on the suspense begins
to build your heart beats faster and faster by the minute with your
anticipation for the jump scare growing. The unrealism of the movie not only
makes the tension rise within the movie as anything could possibly happen,
therefore creating an alluring and captivating plot to the movie. Another
reason that our group chose the horror genre is because of a common theme
shared throughout the stories. The unknowingness of the movie hooks the viewer
right in as they want to know what is going to happen next. Normally, horror films
follow the traditional pattern of the “good guys” coming out on the top and victorious
against the feat they were facing and the “bad guy” losing the battle it was
fighting against the good. A couple of mishaps may happen throughout the way
and some main characters may pass, but at the end they come out victorious.
I was first introduced to the horror
genre via reading. During middle school we were introduced into the horror
genre by reading excerpts and short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe, a well-known
horror genre writer. His stories were so captivating in the fact that they were
grotesque and had such an unexpected outcome that consumed the reader in. They
were so different compared to the traditional short stories we had read in
class that I was intrigued with them. As I continued to expand my knowledge on
the horror genre as a whole, I was introduced to Stephen King author of the
book “It”. The book became so popular that it later went and became a live action
movie that was split into two parts.
The iconic opening scene of the
movie “it” starts with Georgie going out on a rainy day playing with his paper
boat. He follows it until it falls down a sewer. This is where he first
encounters Pennywise the infamous clown. Here Pennywise bites Georgie’s arm off
and pulls him into the sewer after having tricked him into thinking that he
would hand him back his paper boat, which had fallen into the sewer. By the
movie having a captivating opening the viewers are immersed into the movie
right off the bat as they are left with questions spinning in their heads.
By having seen the introductory scene
of the movie I would like my group to follow in the same footsteps in creating an
introductory scene to a movie. By incorporating a dark setting, with eerie
music being played in the background and using technical special effects we
would be able to properly make an effective introduction that captivates the
audience attentions leading them to continue watching the movie.
